Historic Saint Elmo

Saint Elmo, Tennessee:

Nestled at the base of Lookout Mountain, Saint Elmo is one of Chattanooga's oldest and most cherished neighborhoods, a place where Victorian-era charm meets an active, outdoors-driven lifestyle. Developed in the late 1800s as a streetcar suburb, its tree-lined streets, well-preserved historic homes, and walkable business district have made it one of the city's most sought-after places to live.

Saint Elmo is one of just four historic neighborhoods in the city recognized by the US Department of the Interior and protected by the City of Chattanooga. Exterior alterations are required to adhere to historic guidelines meant to retain the charm and unique architectural features of the neighborhood homes.

There is no shortage of things to do here. Ride the legendary Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, the world's steepest passenger railway, right from the neighborhood's doorstep. Explore Reflection Riding Arboretum, a stunning 300-acre nature center offering hiking, biking, and paddling just on the “other side” of Lookout Mountain from Saint Elmo. Hikers can access Sunset Rock, Point Park, and the broader network of Lookout Mountain trails within minutes. There are several trail heads that embark from Saint Elmo. When you've worked up an appetite, grab a bite at Little Coyote, Mr. T’s Pizza , or catch live music at The Woodshop Listening Room.

Fall is a particularly vibrant time in Saint Elmo and greater Chattanooga, with several upcoming events to enjoy: the WanderLinger Biker Festival (Sept. 6), the Chattanooga Top Chef Cook-Off (Sept. 13), and the much-loved Cheese & Beer Festival (Sept. 18–19).

What truly sets Saint Elmo apart is the historic community itself. Young families are drawn to its sidewalk-lined streets, neighborly culture, and the rare gift of world-class hiking trails practically in the backyard. It's a neighborhood where kids ride bikes after school, neighbors wave from porches, and adventure is always just a short walk away - the very best of historic small-town living. And you’re just minutes away from downtown Chattanooga!
